I agree and disagree with the Archbishop's view on the population problem. I don't think that education alone will bring the world's population greater stabiity. I think that a combination of that list we named in class, with other options such as availibility of contraceptives, oppoitunities for women, and an increase in genereal health, are all needed to foster population stability. Of course the Catholic Church does not agree with some of these views, and that is okay, but there is really only so much that the Catholic Church can do to help this issue. Even though I am a non-Catholic, I still believe that there needs to be more than one option to bail us out of this global problem.

I thought that this was really interesting and very relevant to our class discussions. I definatley agree with you when you say that the information in the letter sounds like the information from our book with a moral spin on it. Both stress the importance of education in developing countries, but they have different view on contraception.

I thought that your calculations were really interesting. It is easy to simply say that filters should be installed on the trucks to reduce the amount of the toxic particles that the trucks release. But, when you calculated how much that would actually cost filters are not just a quick fix. The cost then leads to the issue of is the regulating the environment worth it, which ideally it definately is but it will certainly cost some people a lot of money.

I think that it is a smart idea to do this. Although companies may need to produce more plastic at first because the bags are thicker, in the long run it makes sense because they are reusable. Like you said, it might even monetarily benefit the companies.

It is bad enough that they lake affects such a beautiful animal, the flamingo, but it also affects the people near the lake. Something needs to be done about the polution issue that is going on at the lake.

Very interesting. People seem to jump so quickly to something that they're told is a total solution. What is simply a positive-looking theory one day can become the fashionable enviro-accessory the next. It seems that people want so much to believe that they're doing something productively beneficial for the environment when they do such things as use paper over plastic. We're always looking for a quick fix to our problems. Something simple that's going to create huge benefits for the earth, and do equally great things for our own feeling of self-satisfaction. We should really do more research into the things we think are doing so much, before we throw so much faith in them.
I think it's funny how most people know that a canvas-type bag is much more beneficial than either paper or plastic, but that so few people use one. It has such a "yuppie-tofu-eating-hippie" stigma attached to it. Sort of ironic.
The word "recyclable" might be too magical for human ears to handle.

I also think this would be a beneficial system because with global warming causing water levels to rise, the excess water needs to go somewhere, so why not contribute as an energy source. Hopefully, this ocean energy will help cut back on pollution and global warming. Nice post.
